Brock L. Greenfield
Brock L. Greenfield serves as the Commissioner of School and Public Lands for the state of South Dakota, a position he assumed in January 2023. Born on October 5, 1975, in Watertown, South Dakota, Greenfield has deep roots in the state with a family background in both education and business.
Greenfield's journey in public service began with his tenure in the South Dakota Legislature. He first served in the South Dakota Senate from 2001 to 2009, where he holds the distinction of being the youngest Senator ever elected in South Dakota history. Following this, he served in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015. In 2015, he returned to the Senate from 2015-2023. In 2022, Greenfield successfully ran his first statewide race, and he became the Commissioner of School and Public Lands.
Throughout his legislative service, Greenfield was recognized for his commitment to conservative fiscal policies, having served 12 years on the Appropriations Committee. His leadership roles include serving as the Senate President Pro Tempore for four years and holding multiple chairmanships and vice-chairmanships across various committees, notably on the Executive Board, Legislative Procedure, Taxation, Commerce & Energy, and State Affairs.
Academically, Greenfield graduated from Doland High School in 1994 and later from Northern State University in 1999, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Business Management and Marketing, and a minor in Economics. His career outside of politics includes roles as a businessman, substitute teacher, bus driver, and baseball coach, and he is a lifetime member of SD Right to Life and the National Rifle Association, a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International, and a member of Kiwanis, reflecting a diverse engagement in community and educational activities.
As Commissioner of School and Public Lands, Greenfield oversees the management of school and endowment lands, ensuring they are efficiently utilized to meet the Office’s fiduciary responsibility to the institutions and taxpayers he serves. His responsibilities include the leasing of state-owned grasslands and mineral rights, managing 97 dams across the state, and serving as a member of the SD Investment Council.
Greenfield's tenure has been marked by his commitment to maintaining the office's tradition of superior, efficient management while exploring new opportunities for land use, such as gas and oil exploration on previously untapped areas. His approach combines his legislative experience with a practical understanding of land management, aiming to benefit both the educational system and the broader community of South Dakota.
Brock Greenfield is married to Kelli, a nurse practitioner, and they reside in Pierre. His mother, Lana Greenfield, also served in the South Dakota Legislature, making them the only mother-son duo to serve simultaneously in the South Dakota Legislature.
